Fashion Films

30 March 2015

Watch Anna, Karl, Alexander, and the rest of the gang.

Here, I've listed all the fashion documentaries that I've watched so far. If ever you find yourself bored and in need of some sartorial inspiration, then these larger than life people with give you just that. It is also advised to bring out a pack of tissues. You may get deeply touched, or cry because of astonishment.

Valentino: The Last  Emperor (2008)

Witness the one and only haute couture connoisseur as he rules over the fashion world. This film captivates his majesty's opulence and divine designs, with comedic Italian touches. Valentino Garavani also explains how the movie Ziegfeld Girl (which is one of my favorite films) inspired him to make women feel beautiful.

In Vogue: The Editor's Eye (2012)

The multifaceted Vogue powerhouse finally puts the people behind the camera in front of the lens. Each editor illustrates certain highlights in their career, and how their individuality, though unconventional at times, fuels the magazine. They are definitely personalities. There is no "I" in TEAM? There is no "I" in VOGUE either! Oh and remember Anna Wintour's first cover? It was the first ever issue to put denim on the cover of a magazine.

Mademoiselle C (2013)

C is for Carine---Carine Roitfeld, former editor-in-chief of Vogue Paris. Mademoiselle truly has an eye for style. She can turn any ordinary location into something mesmerizing with her signature sultry Parisian aesthetic. The film documents her journey (photoshoot, photoshoots, photoshoots!) as she creates her own magazine, CR Fashion Book. People to watch out for in the film: Tom Ford, Jean-Paul Gaultier, and the fabulous Donatella Versace

Signe Chanel (2005)

AMAZING. This TV mini-series takes you through the imaginative and laborious process of creating a Chanel haute couture collection. For me, the true stars of this documentary were not Karl Lagerfeld and his crop of celeb followers, but the SEAMSTRESSES. They make designs come to life. They make Chanel happen.

The September Issue (2009)

I've probably watched this film like 983468 times. Get ready for the nitty gritty behind the glitz and glamour of magazine pages. Witness editors run around like crazy, with handfuls of Marc Jacobs, Louis Vuitton, and other designers from A-Z. My favorite editor, Grace Coddington, traverses several photo shoots and almost always ends up with dreamy photos. And lastly, listen to Anna Wintour say "More colour!" about a dozen times.

McQueen and I (2011)

Alexander McQueen's haunting designs that transcend time, are products of many things that he believes in. Some people may think that his controversial fashion shows, such as Highland Rape, are merely for marketing, but these special shows are actually representations of his mind's musings.

The Eye Has To Travel (2011)

MY FAVORITE FASHION FILM EVER!!! The Empress of Fashion, the late great Diana Vreeland, is the reason why fashion is what it is---a revolutionary movement. She was a true visionary and feminist, who believed that fashion and women are much more than the aprons and hairnets of her time. She was always on the pulse of things, and she dissected and magnified details that SHOULD be noticed. Witty and humorous, Diana Vreeland is as dazzling as the world she created around her. You must watch this as soon as possible.
